We Must Bloom Where We Are Planted. - David Frank Gomes
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David Frank Gomes, a life coach and mindfulness teacher based in Vancouver, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I direct traffic at the intersection where people's hopes, dreams, and ideas crash into the realities of daily life. I see the work I do as helping people find their own unique flow of wisdom, purpose, and meaning at work and play. I do this through deep, brave conversations and by fusing ancient wisdom with contemporary coaching.
My clients are folks who want to explore the capabilities of their own minds. They are not defined by what they do for a living but by why it matters to them. They understand every part of their life is connected, so when they improve one aspect, it ripples out and touches all the other places in their life as well. They cultivate a vision for themselves and do their best to live it with purpose, even when it's messy, hard, or they stumble or fail. They listen to their heart, follow their gut, are prepared to make difficult decisions, and take decisive action when it's called for. They are lifelong learners and risk-takers.
Tell us about yourself
My mother liked to say I was coaching when I came out of the womb:) I came to coaching later in my midlife when I wanted to make a major shift in my life. I'd always been a mentor, people were always coming to me to talk about the big questions in their hearts, and I just knew being a coach would be a perfect fit for me. I felt there was a need to combine the spiritual and practical aspects of life, so I created a blend of mindfulness & coaching. I do it because I believe that everyone needs support from time to time, and it feels good to be able to help people create better, more fulfilling lives for themselves. My work brings me joy and a sense of being in service. I also think it's a very creative and interesting career because every human story is different. But one thing I know for sure. An honest, deep conversation has the power to change a life.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Staying in business for 15 years. Personal coaching was relatively new when I started, and the first few years were very challenging. And I think I've created a very thoughtful and unique approach to personal development that gets sustainable results.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Marketing.
It's a very noisy world, and one strives to be authentic. You have to have patience and faith in yourself. All beautiful and true things take time to develop.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step. TAKE IT.
- If you fall down, pick yourself up again and again and again.
- Enjoy the journey of getting where you want to go. The only reason to have a goal is to become the person it takes to achieve it.
