Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David Di, Owner of David Di Acupuncture, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

David Di Acupuncture offers a natural, drug-free, gentle, and painless solution to restore a patient's body to a healthy, comfortable state as soon as possible. I offer solutions for everything from pain management, sports injuries, insomnia, and anxiety, to functional recovery after a stroke, cancer symptom relief, and support with gynecological or fertility problems.

In my practice, I use a combination of different techniques such as acupuncture, manual therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, cupping, Gua Sha, and more. Each combination contains two to three different treatment methods, which is much more effective than a single treatment method. It can also solve more complicated and long-term physical problems.

Tell us about yourself

I am a licensed acupuncturist in California and an NCCAOM Oriental Medicine practitioner in the United States. I have more than 14 years of experience in Chinese medicine practice in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Los Angeles. During this time, I have successfully helped thousands of patients heal and recover, which has brought me great personal satisfaction throughout my professional life.

My mother, well-known acupuncture and Chinese medicine expert, inspired my passion for acupuncture. I watched her assist more than 100 patients every day, and despite her busy workload, she always customized a different treatment plan for each person to resolve their multiple health problems and restore their normal physical abilities.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is my five-star rating. As becoming one of the best acupuncturists in Los Angeles, it makes me so happy to hear how much my patients love my treatment techniques and how I can help them.

I feel rewarded, especially when my patients share their experiences with me or in reviews. One of my patients texted me that they had a good quality and quantity of sleep after getting the treatment. I appreciate that they recognize my treatment techniques, and I can ensure that my business is going in the right direction.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say that the hardest thing about being a business owner is starting my clinic at the very beginning. I had to start completely from scratch. I had to learn how to do marketing, be a receptionist, bill the medical insurance, restock suppliers, and clean the office myself besides treating patients.

Even though I have a great skill in acupuncture, if people don’t know about my clinic, I can’t practice my skill. However, slowly, patients came to know me and loved my treatment philosophy and results. Today, increasingly, more people are recognizing that my treatments can successfully help them heal and recover.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be sure that you know every single thing about your business, from knowing the cost of your supplies, advertising your business, and organizing the files, to improving your professional skills.
  2. Be patient. It takes a lot of effort and time to build up a business from 0 to 1. You have to learn new things continuously.
  3. Be organized. Keep a to-do list in a clearly visible spot in the office. This will help you organize your workday, ensuring that your most important tasks are completed in a timely manner.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Be sure that you completely understand your target audience. Do as much marketing research as possible and keep analyzing your customers to update your marketing strategies. Keep your professional skill at the top and also up-to-date. Just because you have enough customers, don’t settle for it.
