Traditional Martial Arts Classes - David Cameron
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in martial arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David Cameron, owner of Blue Wolf Martial Arts, LLC, located in Stow, OH, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is a traditional martial arts school that offers a variety of style options for students (Karate, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, etc.). Our current students range in age from 6-66 years old, three months of experience to six years of experience, white belts to brown belts, and more. We try to offer services to as many different types of students as possible.
Tell us about yourself
I have been training in martial arts since I was six years old, and I am now 24 years old. In that time, I have trained in different styles and different schools and achieved many different ranks. When you achieve a certain level of rank, you start teaching, and that is where I discovered my passion for sharing my passion in martial arts with others who share the same. Every day I walk into the dojo to teach, I look at the students coming in and remember when I was in their shoes, hoping someone would share their passion with me. That is what motivates me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is building a school where I can pass on my passion for martial arts to others who have the same passion and create an environment where everyone can learn, grow, and have fun.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest part of running the business is balancing the business affairs while also keeping my passion for being on the floor, teaching, and learning.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The first tip I would give someone is to build a real understanding of the ins and outs of the industry from top to bottom while building a network of people who will help you.
The second tip I would give is to go slow. If you get ahead of yourself, you may feel a sense of being overwhelmed.
The third tip I would give would be to be prepared to sacrifice a little bit of what you enjoy to build the business. Typically people enter their chosen industry because they enjoy being a part of it and don't realize you have to be removed more than they might like from the day-to-day operations to run the business's affairs.
