Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ian Wilson, Co-Founder of DatabrosFTW, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

DatabrosFTW is a database and data analytics company. We want to help business owners get a better view of their business, all while making the employees' life easier and quicker. This results in better business decisions, less turnover, and, ultimately, happy and loyal customers! Our customers range from mid-size companies to start-ups in many different industries.

Tell us about yourself

The DatabrosFTW started with two brothers who had a passion for helping friends upgrade their business systems during the COVID pandemic to help keep their doors open. While doing this, we realized the importance data analytics plays for mid to small-size businesses, but most don't have the technical ability or simply don't know where to start in their journey. We help with that! Our motivation is to make everyone's lives easier while improving everything around them. While we are a software company that specializes in databases and data analytics, we both have backgrounds in business to act as business consultants as well while building our systems.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment to date is working with a business owner to take her company from 3 to 7 employees through better systems, better tracking, and ultimately better decisions. She got to take her first vacation in 3 years a few months ago and was able to view everything going on through her database to make sure everything was going as planned while she was away!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is allocating your time appropriately. Learning when to delegate tasks is challenging but is imperative to your success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you have a full-time job, start your business on the side if possible. This allows you to work on allocating your time appropriately (if your time is limited, you HAVE to focus on what only you can) and working through your business while you still have a reliable income. It also reduces stress and allows you to work with customers you want to rather than scrambling to survive.
  2. Join a "business support group" or hire a consultant. A fresh perspective on any challenges you face can help you push through, as well as have a strong group of friends who are in the same stage of life together.
  3. Be prepared to be a servant as you grow; there is more responsibility. As you hire employees and work for customers, your decisions can change the course of their lives for better or worse.
