What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is a HEART Space Counselors, which is an environment I've created focused on healing, empowerment, alignment, restoration, and transformation. HEART Space Counselors blend the benefits of Kemetic Yoga with the process of therapy to help clients achieve their goals. My clients are individuals seeking guidance in facilitating introspection, emotional regulation, and personal development. We combine traditional talk therapy with basic yoga techniques to identify and process emotions connected to past trauma or current obstacles.
Tell us about yourself
I am a Kemetic Yoga instructor, 200-hr Yoga Alliance Certified. I am also a licensed professional counselor with a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I believe at the intersection of these two disciplines lies an extremely beautiful space for healing to take place. For many years my focus has been crisis counseling with clients experiencing some of the most acute symptoms. I know firsthand how easily and quickly a situation can escalate and spiral out of control. I am formally trained in assisting others with identifying and processing emotions via talk therapy which is highly effective. Also, I've learned to remain calm in emergencies, think rationally, speak clearly, and make sound decisions through my yoga practice. It's when I've been able to merge the two that I've seen excellent results. In the same way the mind stores memories, I believe the body stores experiences. So I created HEART Space Counselors to offer an environment where breathwork and movement support the expression and release of these emotional experiences. It brings me so much joy to empower others and help them find their light.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner thus far has been marrying my professional vision and individual purpose. Sessions don't feel like work to me. I truly enjoy them all.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things is learning that a healthy work/life balance should not be an option; it should be a priority. As a small business owner, you wear all the hats, so time management is key. Designating specific work hours and sticking to them is important so that you can also enjoy downtime.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't wait until your idea is completely perfect to start. Start, you can learn and modify along the way.
- Research and study successful business owners' practices in your field.
- Believe in yourself and your ideas.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Tip #4 Be flexible. The pandemic has taught us all how crucial it is to be able to pivot and adjust to the rapidly changing world around us. Be open to incorporating some level of virtual options so that clients can access your goods/services.
