Own Your Story in an Authentic Way - DAPPER
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lindsay Llewellyn, Co-Founder of DAPPER, located in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Our business, DAPPER, is a human brand studio. We support entrepreneurs, business owners, and professionals to find their authentic voice and elevate their personal and company brands through professional image development, branding services, workshops, and photography/videography.
Tell us about yourself
I fell into entrepreneurship after a few years of organically moving through creative industries, freelance work, and living abroad. When my business partner, Emma, first pitched the idea of starting a human brand studio, I thought to myself, 'This could be exactly what I've been searching for', and it was! I was looking for a space to be more intentional and human about the way I interacted with the business world while leaning into creativity as a way to foster connections.
I'm motivated each day by the idea that entrepreneurs and businesses have the potential to positively impact people's lives and our world at multiple levels and that having a strong brand and clear message just might open the floodgates for change - or at least share stories and experiences that might otherwise not have been heard.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We're two years in and have an incredible team and community of clients who both mean business and live authentically. People are everything - and we're surrounded by gems.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
For me, it's about being a good leader who is both intentional about the impact I can have on my team while allowing them to do what they do best, being curious enough to fail fast sometimes and then succeed
and being able to engage on different business levels.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
There isn't a cookie-cutter version of business development or entrepreneurship that works for everyone all the time, and I'm still learning which shoe fits! What has worked for me in my journey so far is having a community of mentors, clients, friends, and partners who each play one of three roles in our business (and to me): cheerleaders, challengers, and connectors. I've also had to become comfortable with pushing through the fear of failure and the fear of success and finding my and my team members' sweet spots so we can play to our strengths and work together better.
