Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Daniel Sernicola, Co-Founder of Danja Yoga, located in Columbus, OH, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Danja Yoga was born out of the desire to create a new kind of yoga experience where everybody and everybody is welcome and modifications for poses are offered without judgment. We envisioned a neighborhood yoga studio where anyone could come to practice authentic yoga and meditation and where the instructors are approachable and know your name. Danja invites you to relax, work hard, laugh, let go, and just be yourself as you release stress, build strength, and increase flexibility. Our classes challenge you to develop your best self as you clear your mind and ignite your health. We're on a lifelong mission to prove you don't have to bend into a pretzel shape to benefit from yoga.
Tell us about yourself
I began practicing yoga myself when repetitive workouts at the gym caused a decrease in flexibility. Yoga did so much more than increase my flexibility. It helped with anxiety, stress, and overall health. I found myself becoming more confident and able to move better. All of the benefits of yoga changed my life, and I wanted to help others experience these benefits. I'm motivated by seeing people realize the improvement yoga brings to their lives. From those who have practiced yoga for many years to people who have never given it a try, each client inspires me because they show up and are committed to their own personal health.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest accomplishment is introducing yoga to people who are fearful of starting something new and giving back. We've managed to build community in a time when people are having difficulty feeling connected. Through online and unperson classes, we've managed to bring people together, and it is something we are very proud of.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Having a public-facing business, it can be tough to smile continually while trying to provide a safe space for people to practice yoga in the midst of a pandemic. In addition to regular business duties, we've had to stay on top of local, state, and National health mandates. We also clean and sanitize more than many other businesses. It all takes extra time.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Carefully research your market. Know that the people who encourage and cheer you on to start your business may not necessarily be the ones who become your best clients. I've also learned not to take anything personally because everyone has their own story and spectrum of emotions.
