Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Daniel Johnson, founder and owner of Autonomy Health Group LLC/Daniel Johnson Coaching/Effect Fitness, located in Old Hickory, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I've worked with a broad variety of people in fitness training and health coaching. However, the past few years, it's been mostly married men with families...although some single men and I have worked with many women, also. My primary work is helping men restore their health by undoing their cultural conditioning. I show men whose emotional and mental postures have been weakened by lifelong cultural conditioning how to go from being silent partners who consistently tow the company lines they've been told all men in our culture must tow in order to be accepted and approved to actually being heard in their families, their relationships, and ultimately in the world around them. Most men don't see how that very acculturated disposition impacts their health. I teach them how it does. And I guide them through how to de-program themselves to remove the power of that influence and ultimately improve their health and wellbeing.

Tell us about yourself

As with most things, the journey started with me recognizing my own struggles and seeing how those struggles kept recurring and present in the health bottlenecks of my clients. It began with more physically motivated stuff...a fascination with the communication of the body through movement and has evolved over more than two decades into a greater depth of awareness of the many emotional, mental and physical factors that affect the way a body communicates it's in distress. And as I've grown more into a "fully grown man," I feel called to help more men be unabashedly who they are, rather than some tamped-down version of that person, in order to "succeed."

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In short, staying congruent with who I am. Continuing to stay aware of making sure the focus of my professional work reflects fully who I am in the process of becoming--as a man, a creator, a husband, a father, and a creation of God with a unique and divine purpose--and being consistently able to leverage the lessons I've learned to assist my clients in their own processes of becoming.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Remember that business ownership is an opportunity for value exchange. It's dancing the dance of staying aware that the reason for a business's existence is to generate revenue, while bringing value to others in service to those same others.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know God to know yourself.
  2. Embrace your gifts.
  3. Pursue your purpose.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

In the process of evolving my brand from being more client-centered (Effect Fitness--which will now more accurately be a product I offer) to a brand built more around my name. Therefore, some of the current branding and names will reflect that transition.
