Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Daniel Gomez Seidel, owner of Culture and Transformation Consulting, located in New York City, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m an independent ethnographic consultant and strategic advisor. My clients are all sorts of companies, from Fortune 100 CEOs to startup founders and NGOs, who are looking to understand how the cultural dimension (how people behave in groups) affects their world. I can help them problem solve current problems, identify new opportunities, and organize their ideas in such a way that they are acting with a pulse on culture.

Tell us about yourself

I have worked all over the board. As an entrepreneur, in consulting agencies and even in a large bank. After a while, I realized that my talent and interests were too difficult to put on a box and that if I was going to thrive, people would have to hire me for being me. At that point, I decided to go independent and started picking up projects from connections and peers. The rest is history.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In my first year as an independent, I’ve lived on four continents, worked for the UN in Germany, for the world’s largest jewelry company, for a venture-backed science startup, and some other fun projects. I’ve set up a life where I can work from anywhere in the world and where I can decide when to work and when to rest.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There’s no roadmap, you have to be at the helm of your own boat, and sometimes it’s easy to fall into anxiety or analysis paralysis. When this happens, I just breathe and rest in gratitude for what I do have. Reminding myself that things will unfold just as they should.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Try it. You won’t know what it feels like until you’re actually doing it. This is not for everybody, but if it is for you, you’ll know.
  2. Be yourself. There are many people out there with great talents and capabilities. As an independent, your clients will hire you for who you are. From the way you walk through life to how you handle yourself in conversation to your actual output of work.
  3. Enjoy! This may not be your occupation for the rest of your life, so enjoy the benefits of this freedom while you have it!
