Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Daniel Fryer, a Psychotherapist, Author & Life Coach based in Bristol, Avon, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a mental health and well-being consultant and self-help author (I provide 121 therapy and coaching, webinars and keynote speeches, and develop specialist workshops). My clients are people in need of psychotherapy and coaching and businesses indeed of well-being advice and support

Tell us about yourself

I used to be a journalist, working in mainstream print and contract publishing. I fell into mental health by accident as I was offered a taster course on hypnotherapy by chance. I am a rational emotive behaviour therapist (REBT) and clinical hypnotherapist and have been in practice for nearly 20 years now. My motivation lies in helping people deal with and overcome their problems and challenges and lead calmer and happier lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I built a successful practice, first in London, then in Bristol. I developed a pioneering pain control programme for an NHS Trust hospital. I developed a pioneering work-stress programme tailored to the rail industry in an occupational health setting. Developed three group therapy programmes for a psychiatric hospital that I ran for seven years. And I accidentally turned my dog into a semi-famous therapy dog and had my first book published in 2019. A second book is scheduled for early 2024. Recently founded my own well-being consultancy(How To Be).

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Remembering to take a break and learn to let go when I do. Working in mental health and well-being means you often forget about your own self-care, but it is essential. If I don't safeguard my well-being, I'm not in a fit state to safeguard the well-being of others.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Follow your passion for a start (if you don't enjoy what you do, you won't enjoy doing it).
  2. Set goals and focus on those goals as opposed to the barriers between you and your goals, and,
  3. Finally, schedule your time (including breaks, weekends, and holidays) so that you remain calm, productive, and focused.
