Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dani Harms, Founder of Dani Keeps it Real, located in Glendale, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Women's Empowerment Coach. I teach women from their 20s to 60s how to create healthy habits around lifestyle and nutrition to establish routines that help create a low-stress, highly self-intuned, grateful life. I created a course to teach my most vital habits that includes a variety of implementation techniques. My soul's calling is my mentorship program, Slow and Steady, the Anti-Diet, where we go through the course (by the same name) together and share our successes and struggles via a weekly Zoom session. My members call it group therapy💖 I also run wellness retreats, where we fill our cups through a long weekend of self-care, self-discovery, movement, and soul-fueling practices that help replenish the moms and career women that I work with.

Tell us about yourself

This business happened naturally after years of living my own health journey. Ever since I started seeing results in my physical, mental, and spiritual health, I wanted to help other women feel as good as I did. At first, many years ago, I led with fitness and thought that was the end-all, be-all. While moving your body is vitally important and can be wildly therapeutic, I discovered that the most important work is in between your ears. You can't show up to the mat if you can't get your mind right. Additionally, you can't get the results you want from your body if you don't nourish her. So Slow and Steady was born... to help women go at a slow and steady pace to get in mental, spiritual, and physical shape... while staying off the fad diet roller coaster.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've been running my mentorship for a year and a half. The self-discovery that has come out of it has been astounding. So many women think they're crazy that no one else thinks the thoughts they do, but every time someone shares a story, someone else says, "me too." We've shared so much together and have so much space to hold for all other women. I just quit my corporate career of 21 years to follow my purpose full-time.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

When I see someone struggling, I just want to help them. But not everyone is ready. They have to be ready to do the work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The first tip I would give to someone ready to start their own business is not to wait until you are "done" to launch. As a business owner, you want everything to be perfect, but you will change your mind on what "perfect" looks like over and over again. Done is better than perfect; you can tweak as you go. Lastly, lead with your heart, but also remember that your time is worth money. Don't give your services away for free.
