Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dani Causey, owner of Dani Causey Skin, located in Newtown Square, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am in the medical skincare industry - making women (mostly, though men and teens are also a part of my clientele) look and feel better and more confident in their skin. I recently decided that opening my own practice was something I grew more and more passionate about the older I got. The longer I remained in this business was a driving force that I couldn't let pass me by. Also, all I had to do was take a look at the number of women in the business surrounding me to realize I was in good company.

Tell us about yourself

I first started in skincare 24 years ago while working on my Elementary Education/Bachelor's degree at West Chester University. A simple facial, a career path change, and here I am. I have never looked back to where life could have taken me though I suppose that could have gone either way. I am motivated by my patients - their confidence and trust in me not only motivates me but inspires and PUSHES me to be the best practitioner I know how to be. This business can be tough, but as long as you keep your head on straight, focused solely on why you are here - it can be the most gratifying thing you'll ever do (no matter what it is). I am also gratefully motivated by the feedback I receive from others. Whether they are in this business or not, it never ceases to amaze me that you never know who is watching your journey.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In a matter of less than two months, I was able to get my business up, off the ground, running, and fully functional, which I have to say has been my biggest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the hardest thing so far has been wearing ALL the hats. At the moment, it's just me operating my business. I have had to play the role of the Aesthetician, front desk, checkout, inventory, scheduler, gift card designer, website liaison, policy enforcer...you name it. Juggling it all gets overwhelming at times. Some days I just want to go back to my original position as Aesthetician.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it. I am a FIRM believer in doing what makes you happy, and if you don't do it, it's not going to happen.
  2. Bring your hustle. This is HARD WORK. I'm working more now and doing more now than I ever thought I would do, but the hustle is worth it if you want to be successful and grow a successful business.
  3. Have fun. I happened to choose a career that I enjoy and is FUN, but I think finding something you love and turning it into a career and your own business is where you'll find this can be fun!
