What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a commercial photographer with a studio in Tacoma, Washington. I have served customers throughout Washington who has marketing departments in need of fine photography.

Tell us about yourself

After managing another business, I decided it was time to follow my own passion, and I have for the past 35 years been excited for the opportunity and challenge of each shoot I take on.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment has been the fact of being successful in a competitive industry, making profits for over 30 years. Making sure I take on business that excites me is, I think, key to that success, along with a sense of serving other companies success.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I would say the hardest thing in my line of work as a commercial photographer is a patience. There are slow seasons. It's important to keep expenses in line while developing clients you want to work with, then take care of them like they are family.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Develop relationships with the clients you want to work with, and help them succeed.
  2. Be careful with expenses and keep borrowing to a minimum.
  3. Get involved in a social organization (i.e., Rotary), not for leads, but more to become known and trusted. Community is important. Social media can be helpful, but that was not as useful to my business success.
