Offering Quality Dance Classes - Dance Track Studio
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelly Kerr, Founder of Dance Track Studio, located in Wakefield, MA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Dance Track Studio is a dance studio that offers dance classes for all ages and levels of dance. Students can start as young as two years old, learning many different styles of dance. Our main focus is to offer quality dance training in our area in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where learning is a great experience. I want every student to know how important they are and to feel welcomed into a dance family where all of us together contribute to why Dance Track is so special.
Tell us about yourself
I started dancing at the age of two at my mother's dance studio, then called "Russell School of Baton and Dance" I also studied Ballet at the E. Virginia Williams School of Ballet and The Boston Ballet School have performed in the Nutcracker for eight years. I knew at a very young age that dance would be my dream and that pursuing a career would be my main focus. After taking time to travel and perform as a professional dancer, I returned to my roots and now have the honor of following in my mother's footsteps and running our family dance studio known today as Dance Track studio. Dance Track will be entering its 38th year in business this September.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
One of my biggest accomplishments is watching our students grow within the studio and move on to have dance careers of their own. I am so proud to have been a part of that dream they strive to accomplish. To help that dream, I am grateful for the team of teachers at the Dance Track that helped give a well-rounded genre of training. Another accomplishment I am so proud to have is our student following and how supportive our dance families are of the way the studio runs and trusting in us to give their child dance training. There are many choices of dance studios around my area, and I am so honored to be chosen by each and every dance family that believes in the Dance Track Studio and me.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
My favorite part of the business is the dance teacher role in the classroom with the students; they bring me joy and such a positive energy and remind me every day why I do what I do!
The hardest part sometimes is wearing the business owner's hat of a dance studio, making daily decisions, and hoping to lead in a direction that everyone enjoys or agrees with. Everyone always tells me, "You can't make everyone happy," but it's just my nature to try, and I will bend over backward doing it! hehe, I am still learning not to take it personally or so hard if there is a different opinion of something at the studio or a student switches to another studio.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know it takes time to grow a business and a following.
- It's okay to make mistakes and learn from them.
- Try not to be too serious and have fun along the way.
