Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Dhanoa, the lead designer of Dance Floor Dynamics, located in Ontario, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Dance Floor Dynamics and we specialize in vinyl dance floor wraps for weddings and other events. I have dreamed about my dream wedding since I was a little girl and I know almost every bride I work with has had those same dreams. As the lead designer here at Dance Floor Dynamics, I work with our clients to design the perfect floor wrap for their events. Unlike other companies, we don’t limit the number of design changes that our clients can make. If you decide at the last minute that you want to go a completely different direction with your design, no problem! We will do whatever it takes to make our clients happy because at the end of the day, you one get married once (hopefully!) and we want to make sure it’s perfect.

Tell us about yourself

After graduating from a local university with my BBA degree, I was lost and confused about what I wanted to do as a career. I knew that I eventually wanted to own my own business but I just needed to find something that I was passionate about. One day I decided that I wanted to give wedding planning a try and started working for an event planning and decor company. It was there that I realized that I loved the design and decor aspect of my job more than the wedding planning part. I got to see trends come and go in the wedding industry and my husband and I started this business a few years ago after seeing vinyl dance floor wraps become popular in weddings. We are currently the only vinyl floor wrap company north of the GTA in the Simcoe-Muskoka region. My 10 years of experience in the event industry has definitely helped me build a successful company and I absolutely love what I do. I love helping make a bride/groom’s vision come to life. My favourite part is going back at the end of the night to remove the wrap and getting to speak to the couple and seeing how happy they are with everything.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment is definitely surviving COVID. We were a fairly new business when the COVID lockdowns hit and it made for a very tough couple of years for us but we worked hard and persevered. With the government putting restrictions and prohibiting dancing at weddings during COVID, we had a lot of cancellations and postponements. It was tough but we rode out the storm and survived to tell the tale.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me personally, it’s not being able to help everyone. It breaks my heart when I have to turn someone away because we are already fully booked. I wish I could do a floor wrap for everyone! Another is learning to separate business time from personal time, especially since my husband and I own and run the business together. He sometimes has to remind me to put my phone down and spend time with my family because it’s so easy to get consumed in your work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1. Love what you do. There’s nothing harder than getting up every day and going to a job that you don’t enjoy. If you love what you do, you will work harder and put more effort into it and your passion will show through in your work.

2. Network and build relationships. It is extremely important to build a network of people from all walks of life and from all industries.

3. Don’t be afraid to take chances. We all know the saying “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” and it’s true. In order to grow, you need to step outside of your comfort zone and take risks. Big rewards come from taking big risks.

Anything else you'd like to share?

There will always be people that are trying to tear you down. Don’t let them get to you. If someone is trying to knock you down, it is because they don’t want you to be doing better than them. Blowing out someone else’s flame doesn’t make yours shine brighter.

Never stop learning. No matter how successful you are, there are always things to learn so don’t pass up on those opportunities to expand your knowledge.

It won’t be easy but trust me, it will be worth it!
