Ignite Joy, Curiosity, & Confidence in All Youth - Dana Kaplan

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dana Kaplan, Founder of Developing Empathetic Education with Dana (DEED)®, located in Delray Beach, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Education & Emotional Intelligence Coaching for Families, Youth & Organizations. Designing successful lifelong learning journeys together. Discover a model for healthy communication and holistic support that shifts how youth, parents, educators, and thought leaders choose curiosity over judgment, compassion towards the self and others, and courage to leap when fear surfaces.

Tell us about yourself

I once was an out-of-the-box learner who needed help… As a child, I understood all too well the pressures of trying to fit into a standard educational mold. I was sensitive, empathetic, and justice-oriented and had ADHD (though I was unaware). My attributes made me a unique and exciting learner who craved attention and affirmation… but was overlooked. As an adult, I proudly bring my experiences into everything I do and feel uniquely qualified to connect with out-of-the-box learners to draw out their superpowers. Using tools from my expertise as a classroom teacher, coupled with coaching skills from years of 1:1 work with students of all ages, I have the ability to quickly get to the root of what's holding people back and guide them toward holistic transformation academically, professionally, socially, and personally.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Watching and hearing learners find their voice, stand in their own personal powers, and actualize the success path they desire and design is pure magic! More, having families, schools, and large organizations experience the ripple effect of clients committing to their personal growth, and expansive learning journey reminds me of why I chose to leave the four walls of a classroom and become an educator for our collective.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Making sure I give myself breaks and time for myself plays a huge role in how I show up and make a consistent and conscious impact. By embodying the practices I teach and coach, the hard feels easy, allowing me to serve with joy and love.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you can pinpoint what feels safe within your body. In doing so, you'll trust your choices with confidence and ease.
  2. Seek smarter people than you! When you choose to have people with various expertise by your side, you organically grow, expand, and learn exponentially.
  3. Remember to take breaks! Your body is always your ally and wants the absolute best for you! Connect with your body and pay attention to how you physically and emotionally feel.
