Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dan Farrant, Founder of Hello Music Theory, located in London, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hey, I'm Dan, and I run HelloMusicTheory.com. We help people learn to read music! Our customers are music students, parents of kids learning an instrument, and teachers looking for resources to use in their music classes.

Tell us about yourself

I studied music at university and then worked as a full-time musician (I played jazz double bass). But, I injured my back and so had to stop playing. That was when I started this website to "do" music without playing.

Music changed my life, and I love unlocking the joy it's given me for others. But, everyone hates learning the theory behind it all, and it often stops them from progressing. So anything I can do to make the complicated and boring topic of music theory a bit easier and more fun is good for me!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I started the site, it was just for the one-to-one students that I was teaching. But, fast forward a few years, and now it gets over 600,000 visitors a month, and my resources have been used in over 90 countries around the world. Madness!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Not being able to switch off. I see some of my employed friends and how when they finish for the day they don't think about work. But, when I get home, it's all I think about! I'm always scheming and planning how I can grow it. It's not all bad as I love what I do, but sometimes I wonder what it would be like.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start. Stop overthinking it and start working on something right now. No matter how small it is. I started my business by uploading a 1-page pdf with some music theory exercises on. But those small things compound, so start now.
  2. Get a buy button on the internet as soon as you can. When someone at any point throughout the day can put money in your bank account, it changes how you see the world! There are people out there with a credit card burning a hole in their pocket, dying to give you their money. Give them the option to!
  3. I'm gonna loop back to number one again and say just start. So many of my friends don't know what to do, overthink it and never end up starting. Just start.
