Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dan Clark, Founder of The Big Leagues Daily, located in Melbourne, VIC, Australia.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The business is a sports media company that covers baseball (predominantly MLB and MiLB) from numerous angles, including written articles, podcasts, radio shows, social media, photography, and videography. The customers are baseball fans all over the globe, especially in the United States, Japan, South America, South Korea, and Australia.
Tell us about yourself
I first started working in this business as a hobby, writing and talking about baseball, especially my favorite team, the Baltimore Orioles. After growing a sizeable online platform (predominantly Twitter), it just took off in about 2014-2015. The larger the following online, the more opportunities it created, expanding into podcasts, radio, and television guest appearances. My point of difference is I tell it like it is, no fuss. This can divide opinions, but it stimulates conversation. I'm motivated simply by talking to more and more like-minded baseball fans from all over the globe.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Hitting 50,000 followers and, at one stage, having more than 50 active writers from all over the globe.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The challenges of chasing work during the offseason. Often it is tough to manage the balance of being inundated with opportunities between March and October, then rapidly hitting quiet time during the offseason. The free agency helps, but having no games makes it far harder to generate discussion points.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Follow your passion.
- Work harder than your competitors.
- Ignore the noise and the haters.
