Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Lockhart, Founder of Daily Choices, located in Gig Harbor, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the owner of Daily Choices and a Personal Coach for women who want to cease their pursuit of "perfection" so they can experience true freedom of choice in a life where they're always enough.
Tell us about yourself
One of the best choices I ever made was to begin my journey as a Personal Coach by attending school at the iPEC (Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching). From the moment I learned what life coaching was to the day I began my classes, it took five years. I had "reasons" for not pursuing it immediately, which all involved fearing what others would think—my husband, my friends, and my family.
What finally pushed me to start my journey? The unexpected death of my best friend. Losing her helped me integrate the statement "life is short" in a new way. She was someone who had dreams of travel, dreams of finding a partner, and goals of finding a lucrative career. What held her back? Simply put, fear.
The loss of my friend was a wake-up call for me to act. To choose to take a chance, and you know what? My husband was proud of me for stating what I wanted instead of trying to make him happy. My family has supported my choice because they see that it's right for me, and my friends know that I will be excellent as a coach because of who I am inherently as a person.
So WHY are we so eager not to even try? Why do we believe that inner voice that says we will never be "enough" to follow our dreams? We wait for the perfect level of approval, physique, or being "perfect" for the job because part of us remembers we've been hurt and disappointed. We need to truly learn who we are and what we're capable of, and then tell that cautioning inner voice that we are choosing to be brave instead.
Helping other women see their choices in life is what gets me out of bed in the morning. I wish everyone could experience the power coaching can have, so they can start making conscious choices to move forward and then engage in life FULLY with joy and excitement.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Honestly, choosing to start. I have always been terrified of owning my own business because it is so unknown. When you work for an employer, you have a set paycheck, benefits, co-workers, and procedures... when you are an entrepreneur, there is only you.
You are the motivation, the breadwinner, the decider, and the person who needs to come up with the answers. I overcame that fear through coaching and am now just going for it.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Not knowing what you don't know and finding people you can trust to help you discover what you don't know. 😁
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Take a chance on yourself and do it. The rest will come later.
- Be Authentic. They will come if you are messaging your business from your heart.
- Face your FEARS by providing them FACTS. Take away the unknown and make it known so you can choose how to proceed and do it confidently.
