Gear Reviews You Can Trust - Dad Gear Review

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Steven John, Founder of Dad Gear Review, located in Port Washington, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I founded Dad Gear Review to be a resource for dads, moms, and really all people who want to maximize their enjoyment of the outdoors thanks to the advice on the best gear, apparel, and other supplies and by providing comprehensive information and insights from experts in the fields of outdoor adventuring, parenting, apparel, travel, and more. DGR is an online magazine that can not only give people the confidence and know-how needed for safe and fulfilling adventures — with kids in tow, much of the time — but can also inspire people to get out there.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve been both an avid outdoorsman and a freelance writer for many years now. From mountaineering in South America to Europe to exploring peaks all across America to camping to biking to skiing and beyond, I enjoy it all. Having kids changed and, in some ways, complicated things, but our family has figured out how to enjoy nature altogether. I channeled my outdoor experience and my writing experience into one project that has grown into Dad Gear Review.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every time we hear about someone who enjoyed an outdoor experience based on our work, be it because they used a piece of gear we reviewed, tried an activity we covered, or visited a spot we recommended, that’s a win for DGR.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Because we are a small operation, the work never really stops, and that’s a real challenge, knowing when to shut it down for a given day or when to keep scrapping along even when you feel tired and spent. But the excitement usually provides enough motivation in those latter cases, and at other times it’s easy to step away and just embrace being a husband, dad, and person.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The most important thing to do is plan ahead, be that making a full-on business plan you’ll share with banks or investors or just a framework for yourself. Second, be flexible — even a great plan on paper may not work out, so stay nimble and both predictive and responsive. Third, just go for it. Don’t necessarily quit your job or mortgage your house, but if you have a vision, work to make it work, and start ASAP because you’ll be a year older than now next year whether you go for it or not.
