See. Capture. Reveal. - D.See Photography

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Darrius Campbell, Founder of D.See Photography, LLC., located in Winston-Salem, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a photography business. As I've explored many different types of photography, my main customers and what I enjoy capturing most are those looking for Headshots, Portraits, and Branding Photos.

Tell us about yourself

I was introduced to photography at a camp that I attended in my hometown of Salisbury, NC, at Livingstone College. Growing up, it was always something I admired and had a passion for, but I didn't own a camera, so I didn't pursue it. It wasn't until I was a junior in college that I purchased my first camera, but I lost it (along with my passion for photography) in a very unfortunate robbery. A few years later, I was gifted a brand new camera, and from that day, I've been shooting. What motivates me most is the opportunity to help others see themselves in the best way possible. My initials are "DC," but becoming a photographer was never about me and is much bigger than me, which is why I replaced my last initial with the word "See!" I always want people to leave their time with me better, if even in the smallest way than they were before they came, to feel seen and to SEE themselves better. For this reason, I go by SEEographer!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That's a tough one! I've been blessed to meet, work with and learn from the most amazing people and other photographers, have some of my work published nationally and internationally, and have inspired others to begin or launch their own businesses. But my biggest accomplishment has been the opportunity to use my camera to shine light in a dark world and bring joy to someone's life.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Learning to value your work and the time you put into your perfecting your craft so that you don't allow others to undervalue the work you do and the time you put in to do it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it the way that you SEE it! Learn from many, but at the end of the day, you have to be true to the way God gave it to you.
  2. Enjoy the journey! Embrace the good, bad, great moments, challenging moments, and everything else that comes along with owning a business. You're going to feel like quitting, and you should. Because many of us have those feelings quite often, yet we keep going. And so will you.
  3. Use what you have! Don't get caught up in trying to have all of the equipment in the beginning. If you use what's in your hand, steward it well, and it will multiply.
