Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Esther Freedman, Founder of cuteheads, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

cuteheads is a children's clothing label for kids ages newborn through 10. We specialize in special occasions, making dresses, rompers, and accessories for kids (and moms) who love beautiful, one of a kind outfits.

Tell us about yourself

I first started cuteheads more than ten years ago after leaving my job running PR and social media for a large online retailer. I have always loved fashion and kids, and this company combines my two loves. At the time, I didn't have any kids of my own. Now that I have two little girls (and one boy!), they inspire me every day to create pieces they love. When they really love something and try to steal the samples from my office, I know we have a winner. It's special to watch them watch me run my own creative business, and knowing they're proud is a big motivator.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is making it through and even thriving during COVID. We really found a way to grow our business significantly during that time, and things haven't slowed down since.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are so many hard things, but the hardest things for me are staying focused when there are so many potential ways to grow and balancing life as a mom of three. Over the years, I have developed very keen discipline, and that's probably the most important thing a business owner needs: the ability to stay the course and show up, no matter what. Anyone can start, but crossing the finish line is challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Never bet the farm. Try new things, but never try anything that will take your business down if it fails.
  2. Listen to your intuition. People are going to try to sell you all kinds of platforms and programs — especially on social media — but there is no replacement for hard work. If it seems too good to be true, it is.
  3. Stay true to your brand. Knowing and understanding what your brand is and isn't is 100% necessary for success. Having a brand philosophy and point of view will be the thing that helps you really connect with your customers.
