Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy McMillin, Owner of Custom Care Rehab, LLC., located in Peninsula, OH, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Custom Care Rehab is a mobile Physical Therapy service that provides in-home or workplace sessions. We help people recover quickly from dizziness, concussion, and orthopedic injuries so they return to their active lifestyle, all within the comfort, convenience, and safety of their own homes. We have three different types of typical clients. First is the busy family or professional that values convenience, quick results, and flexible scheduling. The second type of client is the wellness client who wants to prevent injury using our assisted stretching and therapeutic massage techniques. The last type of client is seniors who are unable to drive and those who are too symptomatic to drive that prefer our mobile therapy service versus getting behind the wheel themselves.
Tell us about yourself
I have been a physical therapist for 17 years, working for a major hospital system for 15 years prior to starting my own company during the onset of the Covid pandemic in 2020. I specialize in vestibular, concussion, and manual therapy or hands-on techniques. I really love working with new mothers with headaches and neck pain, listening to and solving people's lingering post-concussion symptoms, and stopping patients' dizziness- giving them their quality of life back. All of the therapists at Custom Care Rehab genuinely care about our clients and want them to feel their best!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing my business and expanding our service area to cover nearly all of North East Ohio. In the past two years, I have turned what I thought would be a "side gig" to supplement my income into a business, currently with five therapists. Custom Care Rehab started as a mobile vestibular therapy service but now offers full orthopedic therapy, fall prevention, and injury prevention services. I am just so proud of the growth and expansion in such a short time.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest part of running your own business is managing all the additional tasks and learning them as you go along. Not only am I a Physical Therapist, but a marketer, social media presence, payroll, HR, content writer, insurance verifier, event coordinator, scheduler, SEO specialist, and biller. There is always something on the to-do list, but it's the autonomy of having your own business that is priceless.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Look for a networking group with like-minded individuals that you can refer to.
- Know your audience and find businesses in your community that serve that same clientele. Finds ways that you complement one another so you can help each other grow.
- Look to your local chamber and small business association for free resources and events.
