Reinventing the Creator Economy - Curastory
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tiffany Kelly, Founder of Curastory, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Curastory allows anyone to shoot and edit high-quality video, monetize shows, and distribute to all of their video channels 100% free. Creators + brand advertisers are our users and customers.
Tell us about yourself
I am a sports entrepreneur, data scientist, public speaker, and philanthropist. I am the Founder & CEO of Curastory, the easiest way to get started creating videos while first focusing on a unique market, professional athletes and student-athletes. Before making my leap into the world of startups, I joined ESPN Stats & Information Group as a Sports Analytics Associate, where I created ESPN's College Football Fan Happiness Index.
I was the first African-American analyst to join the team. Throughout my tenure with the leading sports multimedia company, I became an advocate for harmonizing creativity, human traits, and data science. I get excited every morning to work on Curastory because we are building an income that didn't exist for creators, helping them become media companies + driving revenue for brand advertisers.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Raising over $3.5M to date as I am a black female founder. Also, taking care of employees. Allowing them to build generational wealth as well as myself.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Perception. I've been struggling lately with wishing I could tell every single person why I have to make the decisions I do, but I can only be transparent to a certain point before confidentiality issues. It's tough, but sitting in this seat is not easy, but being that I am a super open and transparent leader, I feel that makes it a bit easier. And my team trusts me.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Buckle up. You're giving much of your life to this. The main characteristic that separates successful entrepreneurs from the rest is perseverance at all costs. Just stay in it.
- Put people first. Caring about your employees goes an incredibly long way. You can't build this business without them & you can't do it all yourself. Delegation is worth it & placing faith in others.
- Really be passionate about the problem you're solving, or it's going to be hard to wake up every day to do #1.
