Tell us about yourself

After over a decade in corporate America, I needed a change. It started as a feeling of emptiness with the work that I was doing (also known as languishing). But it moved into feelings of burnout pretty quickly. I knew I needed a break from working, but after my time away, I would look for another job. Initially, my goal was to take three months off and do nothing or whatever filled my soul.

However, after having a few weeks away from the tenuous responsibilities I faced within my career, I felt something that I had not felt in many years. I felt a sense of freedom, calm, inner peace, and overall serenity. I didn't know how much I needed my time back to find myself again because there was too much noise and too many things to-do's, all for someone or something other than myself. I decided I wanted to keep the experience I felt during my time off. At that moment, I became determined to launch Serenity Psy Consulting.

I built my website on Wix, set up a LinkedIn page, and started designing the courses and workshops I wanted to offer. I am most motivated by living daily in my purpose and staying deeply aligned with my passion and in the flow so that the services I deliver NEVER feel like work. I am no longer motivated by money or status. Still, I am inspired by my ability to have complete well-being and a sense of overall peace and presence.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been building, expanding, and utilizing my network (in a short time) to secure new clients without paid marketing and advertising. I am taking on projects that allow me to stay true to my purpose, and in turn, my goal has stayed true to me. Another accomplishment has been setting healthy boundaries, so I do not allow my business to precede my well-being and my family. As a breast cancer survivor, I am truly blessed and grateful for every day I have. I want to be fully present to experience it.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing I have faced as a business owner is to wear all the first hats. That means you have to know how to do business development (to include a pipeline of clients), manage the engagements you win, deliver based on client needs, track invoices, be a social media wiz, and repeat the cycle each time.

I am sure I am leaving something out, but overall it is a lot and can start to wear you down, especially when it is an area that does not energize you. So I have learned how to lean into the things that energize me and grow my business organically so that I can take my time with the areas of entrepreneurship that may be draining.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start before you're 100% ready. There is always going to be a better time to start your business. If you are risk-averse, start your business part-time while maintaining your day job as a W-2 employee.
  2. Get a business coach OR surround yourself with people currently thriving at what you want to do. Talk to them regularly to get advice, lessons learned, and thought partnership.
  3. Use your existing network to grow and stay true to your purpose while increasing your business. Relationships are crucial, and when you can have someone vouch for you, that is guaranteed business. Then, when potential clients or customers see your passion, confidence, and conviction for the services you offer, it translates into something they want to buy.
