Crafting the Catalyst - Creative Chameleon Studio

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in graphic design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Madison Carr, Founder of Creative Chameleon Studio, located in Columbia Station, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run Creative Chameleon Studio, a brand strategy & design agency focused on helping businesses reach the next level. I guide business owners through the discovery and refinement of their brand strategy, so they can understand exactly who they are and how to position themselves for the most impact. I then develop a logo and visual identity, built on strategy, that allows their market to form a connection with them.

Tell us about yourself

I've been designing for seven years and working directly with clients as a freelancer since I took my first design class. With a background in fine arts, I was drawn to design because of the way it marries aesthetics and logic. Helping people understand and take control of their brand is my motivation. Walking them through the process of crafting their strategy and then designing their identity is my favorite part of my job.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Making a living doing what I love is a dream come true. As my business grows every year, I have a new milestone to be proud of. To have full control of my livelihood is a blessing, an accomplishment I'll always be grateful for.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being successful as a business owner requires both skill and hustle. It takes more than working 9-5; it takes the risk and relentless effort. Beyond the skill you provide, there's an endless list of other things you'll need to learn to find success in sales, networking, accounting, collaboration, writing, marketing, etc. It can be overwhelming, but if you are eager to learn, you will be all the better at it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be prepared for two years of famine; no business is profitable overnight. If you go into it with your ducks in a row, you'll be fine!
  2. Get comfortable networking. No business can survive in isolation, so meeting people and making connections will be a lifesaver.
  3. Learn to schedule rest. It's too easy to overwork yourself, and while hustling is a requirement, there will always be a point where you lose efficiency if you're too tired. Figure out a good schedule that gives you time to think, work on other skills or personal projects, or just clock out for a bit.
