Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Courtney Stanley, Owner of Courtney Stanley Consulting, LLC., located in Detroit, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a keynote speaker, event emcee, business coach, and host of the podcast for leading women in business, "Dare to Interrupt." I create content and facilitate conversations that empower professionals to lean fiercely into the power of leading with vulnerability and empathy, owning their story and amplifying their voice, and seizing silver lining opportunities to grow with purpose.

Tell us about yourself

The heart and soul of my business is having conversations that matter. I began taking the stage and interviewing others when I realized how avoidant the professional world is to discuss tough - but important - topics, such as sexual harassment in the workplace, office politics and bullying, toxic leadership, self-worth versus market value, and more. Anytime an audience member, coaching client, or podcast listener shares feedback that the content I've shared has made a positive impact on their life... that is what motivates me to keep creating, speaking up, and connecting with my community.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I launched my business in January 2020 and haven't looked back since. I'm most proud of my determination, resiliency, and grit during the tougher days of being a business owner.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It's exhausting. The hustle, the grind, and the constant desire to achieve more can really wear on you, which is why practicing strict boundaries and structured self-care is so critical. I was drawn to the limitless growth potential entrepreneurship offered, and it really is just that: limitless. This kind of opportunity is incredibly rewarding and also draining at the same time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Failure is the greatest teacher, and self-belief is the most important strength you need to harness. Confidence is knowing that when you fall down, you'll get back up. You can do it.
  2. When you become your own boss, you need to remember that you're also your own employee that you are managing. How would you treat someone working for you? Show yourself that same level of patience, grace, and care. Don't forget to celebrate your wins (and take vacations).
  3. Know your market value and practice your pitch until any kind of imposter syndrome that lives inside of you has been put on mute indefinitely. People will believe what you tell them. Make sure you know what you're bringing to the table and speak it with confidence.
