Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in cosmetics, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jaylene Howarth, the founder of Impact Medical Cosmetics, a cosmetic clinic in Canada.

Tell us all about your business...

We are a cosmetic clinic offering aesthetic injectable and facial treatments. Our customer base is largely women, who seek our services to gain or boost their confidence, and age gracefully.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a business owner?

I am a people person. I love connecting with others on every level and being able to make someone feel like they actually matter. I think that is a key factor in this business, however, it's not always the case when people walk into a business in our industry. It can be incredibly intimidating for someone to walk into a pristinely aesthetic establishment, with beautiful people who work there, who may or may not be warm and welcoming. And then factor in that you are there because you are seeking to improve something about your physical appearance and there's a good chance that you feel insecure about it.

I started my business because I wanted to create an environment where patrons would feel completely comfortable and supported in their needs and desires. I wanted to create a company where the atmosphere and culture is uplifting, positive and a safe space for not only our clients but also the employees. What motivates me is knowing that we've made a difference for someone, especially if they've had a bad experience previously and being able to redeem their past experiences. It is incredibly fulfilling to know that you had a part in making someone feel more confident.

As an entrepreneur, what does success ultimately mean to you?

Definitely surviving a pandemic. I am grateful for all the challenges. Every entrepreneur and/or business owner will inevitably encounter many throughout the years, but I feel as though this past year has taught me what may have taken 10 years to learn otherwise.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being an entrepreneur?

I would saying being emotionally connected to your business is challenging at times because when you reach periods of adversity you feel the stress that much deeper. Also, being responsible for the livelihood of your employees. I want my team to flourish and sometimes that weight on your shoulders can be incredibly heavy.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

1. Make sure you're passionate about what you're trying to build.

2. Be resilient and persistent in your pursuits.

3. Failure is going to be apart of the process no matter what, embrace it.
