What's your business, and who are your customers?
I operate a virtual therapy private practice that started in March of 2020, so right around the start of quarantine. I work with millennial women who struggle with anxiety, depression, boundaries using evidence-based therapeutic strategies.
Tell us about yourself
My clients motivate me. I work with women who are struggling with similar mental health concerns but in very different ways. The best of this work is seeing transformation in my clients' lives from the beginning of therapy to even the middle. People often go to therapy because the tools that they have tried have not worked so far, and working collaboratively to explore helpful ways of navigating clients' presenting concerns and seeing growth over time is a highlight of my work.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I'm going into my second year of running a business full time, but I would say my biggest accomplishment so far is navigating the everyday operations that keep my business going. I think it's pivotal to have systems in place that makes things a bit easier.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Maybe not hard, per se; I think navigating and wearing so many hats can be challenging at times. What I have found helpful in exploring the things I do very well and seeking/outsourcing help for the things I need help with.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- I think having a defined niche is very helpful. Everyone cannot be your client, and that is okay. Keep working on who your target audience is and speak to them, and your ideal client will find you.
- Another tip is to outsource. Just because you can do everything is not an indication that you should. Burnout is real, and I find one of the ways to minimize the potential for burnout is by knowing what your mental capacity/workload is.
- No amount of self-care can eliminate burnout if the working conditions are not conducive to your overall well-being.
