Your Healthy Active Sitting - CoreChair

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patrick Harrison, Founder and CEO of CoreChair Inc, located in Aurora, Ontario, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We design high-quality sitting solutions that address back pain through optimal posture and encourage healthy movement that stimulates your body metabolism, supported by passionate customer service and no-hassle guarantees.

Tell us about yourself

I am best described as a serial entrepreneur with a University degree in Kinesiology. I have always had a keen interest in health and physical activity and completed my first IronMan at Lake Placid in 2008. I am usually described as an optimistic perfectionist that enjoys learning about all facets of any challenge and constantly shuffling the deck to discover a better solution.

A passion for helping people initially drew me towards designing unique seating solutions for people dependent on wheelchairs for mobility. This has carried over to the mass of people that endure chronic sitting problems and have discovered the efficacy of our solutions and shared it with their friends and general reviews.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My original business began by designing and creating custom sitting solutions for a person dependent on wheelchairs for mobility. This company grew from a clinical service to a manufacturing venture with International distribution and eventually sold to a large US wheelchair manufacturer. This allowed me to retire at age 40, but unable to be content with solely recreational activities. I pursued several other successful businesses, including Alpaca farming, Land development, and philanthropic ventures.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Discoverability and navigating through the rapidly evolving communication technologies guided by self-proclaimed experts are the greatest challenge in current times.

Traditional business channels are undergoing a significant change, which makes it difficult to lean heavily on past successes and processes to bolster your intuition. The IOT has become a go-to solution process for the vast majority of businesses, which causes an overload of information for potential consumers and the need for a unique, creative, entertaining, and engaging presence on the internet to let people know that you have a natural and effective solution for their needs.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Prepare with focus and optimism, vet all possible downsides with contingencies, and be ready for the unexpected daily. Planning for success should include awareness of potential hazards.
  2. Align yourself with valuable people from multiple disciplines that you can rely on to share your vision and work at your pace but wait to set them loose to work independently without oversight. This is your baby, and it is extremely valuable that you ensure that all parts synchronize.
  3. Avoid creating business relationships with friends and family. If you do, create clear agreements as though you are already splitting up.
