Create Confidence In All Literacy Areas - Confident Learning

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tara Trujillo, a Certified Academic Language Therapist of Confident Learning LLC, located in Las Vegas, NV, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Confident Learning LLC offers a therapeutic level of tutoring structured to help struggling readers, including those with dyslexia. Using the Orton-Gillingham approach, Confident Learning uses Alphabetic Phonics, which is a comprehensive intervention for students with dyslexia at the elementary and secondary levels. This structured, multisensory curriculum is evidence-based and backed by research.

Tell us about yourself

My journey to understanding dyslexia and then working toward becoming a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) began when my daughter's reading difficulties were noticed in PreK and continued through 2nd grade. We then had her tested, and it was at that time she received her dyslexia diagnosis. Before that, she had received tutoring services in our area, including Response to Intervention at her public school. I soon became aware that her learning gap was widening year to year. Despite the interventions from school and tutoring centers, I knew she needed a different approach.

Through research, I've learned that those who have written-language disorders, including dyslexia, need an Orton-Gillingham-based approach, which is Multisensory Structured Literacy at a therapy level. This could not be provided to her even with an Individualized Educational Plan. At this point, I eagerly sought out and started my ALTA journey to become a CALT Certified Academic Language Therapist, aka Dyslexia Reading Therapist. After 22 years of teaching at public schools, I left. This was the best decision. Currently, I help not only my daughter but others as well.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

1 out of 5 is dyslexic. Students with dyslexia require a different approach, and I am blessed and honored to help those who need it the most.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Getting my name out there! Bringing awareness to the public about dyslexia and how I can help!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It needs to be your passion, where you wake up every day and love what you do.
  2. Be prepared to work 24/7 and give it your all each and every day!
  3. There will be ups and downs, but that's the nature of the beast! Keeping moving forward!
