Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nola Peacock, Founder of Confident Happy Kids, located in Okotoks, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I support kids ages 4-18 years through one on one coaching and group programs to develop a powerful mindset so that they feel confident, happy, and motivated and become resilient and successful young adults. I also work with parents to teach them the best ways to support their child or teen.

Tell us about yourself

I have always loved working with kids. I was a pediatric oncology nurse and also mentored kids through music for many years. When my own son struggled with depression, I knew I had to find the best ways to help him. Together, my son and I discovered the strategies that worked best for him. He played guitar and wrote his own lyrics to help him work through his emotions. It took many months to heal emotionally, but he is now happy and doing things he loves. My son taught me that there is always an answer and the importance of finding strategies that work for you. There is not a cookie-cutter approach to mental wellness.

While my son was struggling, it was a very difficult time for our whole family. Once my son was doing well, I was motivated to help other kids who were struggling with anxiety and depression. I believe children and teens need to have strategies in place when life throws them a curve ball. Having a strong mindset and feeling confident enables kids to move through life's challenges with greater ease.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I love when I see a child or teen shift and realize how amazing they are. I remember one client who was seven years old and was being bullied every day at school. I taught him some strategies to deal with bullying, and the following week he came back and said, "Guess what? All the kids are being nice to me!" He had the biggest smile on his face. These smiles are what keep me going.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is being totally responsible. I can't blame anyone else but myself if things aren't going well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are doing something you love.
  2. Find support. Have people you can bounce ideas off of, ask questions, and get advice from.
  3. Surround yourself with successful business owners.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I believe it is crucial to teach children/teens life skills, including creating a daily routine of nurturing themselves. Parents can do this by setting a good example. When parents take care of themselves, not only can they be better parents, but they also show their kids how to take care of themselves.
