Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebecca Osei, CEO of Concierge Psychology, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a boutique mental health practice offering high-quality concierge psychological services to teens and adults with a variety of mental health needs.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve loved psychology since I took my first course in high school. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it initially, and I actually thought I might go into marketing, which is a bit ironic since I do now have to manage the marketing of my practice! However, as I took more advanced classes, I knew I wanted to be a therapist and work hand in hand with people to help them through their darkest and most trying times. Most of my training and early work was with people with severe mental illness or those in hospitals or incarcerated. However, when I saw the need for a practice that specialized in providing high-quality, accessible care that prioritized confidentiality for those whose career or lifestyle precluded them from seeking care in a traditional office setting, I founded Concierge Psychology. Since then, we’ve grown and adapted to the changing needs of our clientele, adding offices in Atlanta, GA, and Los Angeles, CA, and expanding our telehealth options to 33 states and counting! I love seeing what our practice can do and knowing we are helping people every day, but for me, the thing that drives me most is seeing the clients I work with individually growing and improving their lives through our work. Because, at the end of the day, that’s why I became a psychologist.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I dreamt up Concierge Psychology in 2013, it was novel. Concierge medicine was in its infancy, and concierge psychotherapists were practically non-existent. No one understood the model (clients or peers), and I spent a lot of time trying to explain it. Today, the model has grown and been adopted by therapists nationwide. Concierge Psychology, the name of my practice, is being used as a term to describe any practice utilizing our values and approach. It is really amazing to see so many people understanding and embracing our approach today.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

When you own a business, everything falls on you. You take on all the risk, financial and emotional! You own the successes but also the failures. If someone is unhappy, they blame you, and to me, part of the job is being the scapegoat. Employees can reference policy when doing things like enforcing a cancellation policy. But everyone knows who wrote that policy, which can mean you’re seen as the bad guy. Therapists tend to be empathic people who want to make others happy, so doing anything else, even when you know you’re in the right, can be really hard.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Do your research! Make sure you’re prepared for the administrative work, legal hurdles, and marketing decisions. Be prepared financially for some tight months as things ramp up, and have a plan to support yourself. Most importantly, make sure you’re excited and have people in your corner to cheer you on!
