Creating Unity for the Common Good - CommonUnity Consulting

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kathy Solberg, Owner of CommonUnity Consulting, located in Everett, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I create unity for the common good and work with the government, businesses, and non-profits. We all want to maximize ourselves, our time, and our impact.

It isn't easy to see ourselves as others do. To accurately assess our strengths to see where we can best spend our time for unparalleled results to impact the greater good and be our best selves. This is where the community shows up.

We work with people. Individuals and the collective of a team, workplace, community, or region. We all exist within many systems, some more functional than others. Plans change when people change. People change when they feel loved and cherished.

We work with leaders to embody leadership. The creation of space is essential. Reach for the individual to reflect and see clearly. Freedom to come together - thinking out loud in a safe place. Supported area for deep dives into singular aspects of issues. Space to acknowledge - ourselves, others, and possibility.

We will learn from you, share time, create the process to achieve, move forward, and do the work to foster sustainable change. See more about our approach to the solution - Explore, Context, Engage, Strategy, Implement, and Accountability.

Tell us about yourself

I left my role as the Executive Director of a leadership organization because I could not bear the thought of people thinking that after three years of collective trauma with the pandemic, they could return to the way things were. We learned a lot. My brand is compassion, connectedness, and positivity.

I want my legacy to be seen in others' realization of their potential and the impact they make with that knowledge. I advance that best in my leadership and life today by gathering groups from 2 -200 to work together to be their best selves. Why do I do what I do?

When you don't have something, you often focus on how to make it happen or obtain that. For me, that something was 'community.' My work has been creating, maintaining, connecting, supporting, and growing a community. I help people to know they are not alone, see them, and foster insights and connections to be their best. Personally. Professionally. Think of me as a personal trainer, guiding and helping you show up. No sit-ups, no laps - lots of introspection and application.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment this last year is to help an organization working on green housing create a collaborative governance plan. Or it is the bringing together of 3 groups for peer support. One group comprises leaders of non-profits, and one is for people suffering from burnout.

Another is to support people exploring accountability and processes to set goals and achieve clarity. Every person who sees themselves more positively and works to show up authentically is an accomplishment!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Prioritizing time and projects. Knowing where my yes and no live and using each one in a way that exhibits discernment. I value the time I spend on weekends and evenings, not working. Having my own business and thoughtfully using my yesses and nos can take time and effort. Every time I do, I gain time with family, doing art, and those in my community I care about.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start at the end, see where you want to be, and plan backward.
  2. Be realistic about how much work you must do in your business.
  3. Know your why. If it is money, sit down with a pencil and paper and look at reality.
