Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Praise Santos McKenna, partner and co-founder of ComePlum, located in San Francisco, CA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
ComePlum is a branding photo studio for go-getter women who are impacting the world.
Tell us about yourself
My personal purpose statement is, “To honor God while honoring my strengths and my limitations by inspiring people to live inspired lives with beauty, humor, and authenticity”. The vision for all to live inspired lives is what keeps me motivated to continually show up for my clients and community.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
It’s been incredible to be able to see needs and have the capacity, creativity, and go-getterness (and grace) to be able to provide a solution. For example, because of our experience in the wedding industry, we've seen the need for couples and professionals who need education on how to make their event more socially impactful and sustainable. The solution we provided is an educational platform called Ethical Weddings which has been a joy to curate and learn from our contributors too.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Separating myself from my business when it comes to critique and feedback. This business feels so much a part of me. And it doesn't help that I'm also a natural empath. Hearing when people don't have a superb experience with us, I naturally take it to heart. It's taken a few years to learn to let it be apart from myself, seeing it simply as data to make our systems better.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
1. Seek community (if not create one!) We need to be able to serve colleagues within our industries as much as we need to receive from them too.
2. Do what makes you come alive.
3. Find joy in continually up-leveling your systems.
Anything else you'd like to share?
If you’re on the fence wondering whether or not you should do it (whatever “it” may mean for you), do it. This is the sign you’ve been waiting for! Try and fail or try and succeed. Our world is better when you try!
