Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Alison Sheesley, Co-Founder of Comedy Is Therapy, located in Denver, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a registered play therapist who provides play therapy to people of all ages. While adults find relief in talking over their difficulties with an understanding therapist, children often cannot express their thoughts and feelings in words.
Because children often do not have the words to express feelings, they may represent how they feel by acting out. When children have the opportunity to show how they feel through toys, they often feel better because their feelings have been released. You have probably felt something similar when you have been upset or anxious and confided in someone who cares about you. Play therapy is like that for children. We have also found improv comedy to be like that for adults and offer weekly improv comedy-based groups for adults struggling with social anxiety, isolation, perfectionism, and other concerns.
Tell us about yourself
I love my job! I love being a play therapist, and I also love owning my own practice. It is so fulfilling and rewarding every single day. I am always learning something new, and I love feeling effective as a clinician and supervisor of play therapy.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is the healing work we do in my play therapy office, helping children, their parents, and adults heal from trauma and other relational wounds.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is maintaining healthy boundaries; I think I want to help everyone and do everything.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Good question! I think you really just have to enjoy the journey and make space for your own feelings along the way.
