Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Davis Carbo, Co-Founder of Combat Sales, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Combat Sales is a sales training and development company that offers our flagship service: The Combat Sales Bootcamp. Our boot camp pairs a 10-15 hour online training with a 10-16 week apprenticeship in door-to-door sales. We offer three branches: Pest Control, Solar, and Security. Upon completion of the boot camp, graduates can earn certification and use Combats Placement Services to earn job opportunities with our network of hiring partners. Best part? The boot camp is at no cost to our candidates. We help anyone who wants to fast-track their sales career. Most of our demographic of candidates are between 20-27 and include college students and recent graduates. However, we're looking for people who want to be the best and are willing to go through the toughest sales industry in the nation to get there. Combat is the frontlines of sales training.

Tell us about yourself

I studied Human Learning and Development in school and have a passion for training and education. Teaching sales, leading sales teams, and developing young men and women into professionals is the vehicle in which I can hone my craft as an educator. I love building things, and the fact that I get to work with my best friend, co-founder, and twin brother Greg, build something that can help people and contribute towards the future generation, AND have an outlet for my creativity is a dream come true.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is in two parts. First is the impact of Combat's charity Combat Pointblank. CPB is an organization within Combat that prioritizes giving back. The Combat Team has made it a priority to donate 10% of our earnings to charitable organizations. Our donations have helped provide thousands of meals, house low-income families, and build new classrooms for schools. We're very proud of these efforts. Secondly, over the past two years, Combat has designed and built a custom training platform that we believe is the future of online training. We've brought a practical application, futuristic design, gamified learning, and AI-driven initiatives all into one program that gives the user an experience never before seen. It's been a blast to see it come to fruition.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is wearing multiple hats. As an entrepreneur, you have to be the builder, the marketer, the designer, the accountant, and anything else the business needs. As you grow in your business, you can hire help, but at first, you're doing everything you can to get your idea off the ground.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You don't NEED a mentor. Use the internet as your mentor. Sure, if you can get advice from someone, take it. But just remember that advice from one person is limited to that person's skillset and experience. My brother and I built Combat by listening to videos, books and finding different people to learn from. We used contractors, agencies, and teams throughout the world to learn from. The age-old advice of finding a single mentor isn't necessary in today's age.
  2. Word-of-mouth marketing is the ultimate sign that you're headed in the right direction. If your customers tell people about your business, you're in a good spot. Do more of what you're doing.
  3. BUILDING a company is different from SCALING a company. Don't scale until the company is the foundation built.
  4. Last one....Have fun with it! Enjoy the ride because the building of the company is the journey you're going to tell your kids about.
