Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erica London, Founder of Colour Their World, located in Oshawa, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Colour Their World is a company that offers various educational resources to educators and children through literature.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Erica London. I'm a wife, mother, content creator, children's author, and Founder of Colour Their World, also known as CTW. Our YouTube platform is where one can find educational, interactive, and fun content for children ages 3-9. Through animated storytelling and music, diverse children's books are presented as read alouds on our channel.
I created a platform that gives an opportunity for self-published and well-known authors to have their children’s books presented in a way that is not only engaging but enables greater visibility and traffic to their individual platforms to generate sales.
My biggest motivation is my children. I needed to be an example for them to see that one should never give up on their dreams. Leaving a 20-year dental career to start my own business was a risk in itself. Looking back, I wouldn't have changed a thing. Being able to present my published books to children in public schools and libraries is a dream come true.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner thus far is not only to have published two children's books but to have partnered with York Regional Police, where I will be a part of their continued strategy in engaging with young people.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being able to take rejection. You need to have thick skin. It's hard at times to feel like you've put your all into something and then have it denied. These things are guaranteed to happen, but don't get discouraged; just take it as a lesson learned and keep moving.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Consistency is key. It proves to your client base that you are serious about what you are doing.
- Be prepared to lose sleep. Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint at heart. It takes a lot of sacrifices.
- Be passionate and love what you are doing; remember why you started. In the moments where you feel like giving up, and when you believe the money isn't coming fast enough, it's the love that will keep you going.
- Create a proper business plan. This is essentially your vision/mission on paper. Though it may change some, it will be a constant reminder of where you want your business to be eventually.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
