Tell us about yourself
I have been a certified aromatherapist since the mid-'90s. For several years, I owned aromatherapy stores (3 in total) and a holistic aromatherapy spa. In 2006, I was asked to head up the Spa Program at a Massage Therapy College and to teach aromatherapy.
My background is in adult education, and this opportunity made me realize how much I missed teaching. I sold my last store and holistic spa in late 2007. I began developing an aromatherapy certification program while continuing to lead a shorter program for the massage therapy college.
In 2012 I left the college and launched my aromatherapy certification program. Over the past ten years, the program has evolved into a fully online international school recognized worldwide. I have found my happy place teaching, writing, researching, and motivating upcoming and new aromatherapists.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Becoming recognized as a credible and peer-respected resource for aromatherapy education.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Keeping all the balls in the air. Despite having a wonderful group of people working for and with us, ultimately, success or failure lands squarely at our feet as business owners.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do it out of love and passion and not for the money. Life is too short to do something you don't enjoy, and success will follow when you have passion and love what you do.
- Prepare to put in the time. Most businesses are not overnight successes.
- Find a mentor, if possible—someone you admire and who is thriving.
