Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Colin Wiebe, President, and CEO of Sessionwire Communications Inc., located in White Rock, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sessionwire is the new industry standard for online music and audio production. The Sessionwire platform makes producing remote sessions simple by providing an integrated suite of reliable, easy-to-use remote production and communication tools. Sessionwire features video and voice chat and an industry-first, completely independent HQ Audio channel for live, pristine, studio-quality monitoring over the internet. Our customers are music creators, producers, teachers, podcasters, and studio engineers.

Tell us about yourself

I am a singer/songwriter/entrepreneur from Vancouver, BC, Canada. I've got 4 nationally released CDs, and I was best known as the lead singer, keyboardist, and guitarist for Canadian rock legend, Randy Bachman of The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive for almost two decades. I was the founder of a publicly traded company, and after my exit, I invested in a local start-up called Sessionwire and became the CEO to help bring remote recording technology to the world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've had many accomplishments in my career, but I think breaking the belief barrier was the greatest. After my net worth increased beyond my imagination, I realized that I had pushed through self-doubt and fear and found self-awareness that allowed me to think bigger.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing I find about being a business owner is learning to manage day-to-day stress. Raising capital, dealing with emotional and often irrational people, and navigating unpredictable markets is a constant pressure that doesn't go away.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Mindset. Create a powerful, vivid vision. Write it down and articulate it clearly.
  2. Solve a real problem for the customer and develop a servant attitude.
  3. Find the right people. The "how" comes with the "who."
