Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership and personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Colin Stevens, Founder of Colin Stevens Coaching, located in Myrtle Beach, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Colin Stevens Coaching is a coaching business that focuses on helping organizations and individuals maximize their impact through leadership development and personal development.

Tell us about yourself

I am an entrepreneur at heart. I founded a basketball development company in 2008, and I have recently turned my focus toward leadership and personal development. I played college basketball, and that motivated me to teach the game to others when I was finished. As I have grown as a leader and worked on my own personal development, I have come to find that progress is often what holds the most significance in life for many of us. We want to see progress in our finances, relationships, health, and careers. What motivates me the most is helping others progress in areas of meaning to them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I believe my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is having a successful business for over a decade and having a wonderful family to go home to. My wife and I have been very intentional in building our relationship with each other and our kids. As a business owner, it can be very tempting to put many things on the back burner for the sake of the business. But I never wanted to be successful in business, yet lack healthy and loving relationships at home. This means the world to me.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me personally, it's been wearing all of the hats at times. I founded my company, so in the beginning, I would do everything. We are service-based, so my interactions with the clients were the product. I also did marketing, customer service, and so on. Now that I have a great team who has taken over responsibilities, the challenge has more been managing people, and if those people get sick or drop the ball, then I've still got to make sure everything runs smoothly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be prepared to work. I think so many people see the glitz and the highlights of entrepreneurs - all of the money and time freedom. But the truth is nobody starts at the top. Working odd hours and weekends has often led many of the folks I know to success.
  2. It's a marathon, not a sprint. It's important that aspiring business owners don't get too discouraged if big success doesn't come quickly. You've got to be able to build a strong foundation, and the bigger you want to make your business, the more time you need to spend building the foundation so that it doesn't collapse under the stress of growth.
  3. Listen to the customer. Keep solving their problem and do it with a good attitude. As soon as you get away from what the customer really wants, you could be in for a rough season. Serve the customer first.
