Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Susan Bate, owner of Coffee Tree Roastery, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We opened more than 30 years ago as Toronto's first onsite coffee roastery, introducing the concept of fresh-roasted coffee beans that would taste as good as they smelled.

Tell us about yourself

The idea was born from 1. an addiction to caffeine and 2. a desire to work for ourselves so we could afford to live comfortably in this exciting city.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Toronto Life recognized Coffee Tree Roastery in their Top Ten Food List in their last two Christmas Editions.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The reality for ongoing resilience, plain hard work, and some serious guts comes with the fun.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Love what you do, surround yourself with people who are good at what they love to do, and give yourself permission to make mistakes along the way.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I'd do it all over again.
