Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lauren Nicole Balterman, a licensed mental health clinician, personal trainer, nutritionist, and mindset and health coach based in Sarasota, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Transformational Mind and Body Coaching. I work with women who have struggled with body image and self-confidence and realized it's so much more than dieting. My services provide therapy and mindset coaching blended with nutritional counseling and personal training. My customers are women between the ages of 20-50 all over the world. Typically my customers have tried several ways to change their bodies and have either been in therapy or have an interest in personal development work.

Tell us about yourself

What motivates me to do what I do every day is my own past. I struggled with an eating disorder for a long time when I was younger. I was determined to learn everything I could about nutrition, fueling my body properly, and fitness. I even became a nationally qualified competitive bodybuilder. I went through the journey that you can "fix" the physical, but if you do not address your mindset and do the internal work, you will not be fully successful.

I received my master's degree in Mental Health. I was the first one in my family to have an advanced degree and was determined to be able to enable women to dig so much deeper. Helping women realize they can do anything they put their minds to requires digging and working through childhood trauma and limiting thoughts and beliefs, and these are so necessary for changing one's physique. Helping women have a newfound sense of confidence and worth is life-changing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am very proud of the things I have learned about myself through being a business owner. I did not realize when I started how much of a personal development you personally go through, especially when starting off.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I feel one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is learning to shut off fully. It is necessary to allow yourself to do this and then be able to come back to clients fully present, but when you love what you do, it can be difficult.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Go after your dreams, surround yourself with people who believe in you but ultimately believe in yourself.
  2. Do research on what you will need.
  3. You will need support both strategically and from a mental perspective - get the help.
