Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kya Muckle, owner of Coach Kya, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help companies use their purpose to achieve growth. I've had the privilege of working with tech-driven companies throughout my professional career, and I continued this trajectory when creating the strategy for my own business. However, once I launched, I attracted the attention of innovative companies and educators across a variety of companies who strive for positive global impact. Not a bad problem for a startup to have!
I work with Employee Resource Groups and other Changemakers to lead an exploration of ways to foster sustainable cities, reduce inequalities, and promote good health to create lasting change across all communities.
Tell us about yourself
Fighting for justice is a principle I've lived by from the time I was a young girl. I remember being part of the movement "Justice for Janitors" and learning what it meant for people from all walks of life to come together to help others fighting for life basics: healthcare, fair pay, and acceptable working conditions. This is the core of who I am as a person and as a coach.
I've upheld the approach of fighting for justice throughout my career. But spending 15+ years in an unfair, submissive corporate culture that attempted to stifle my fearless spirit drained every ounce of my energy, especially when there were much bigger issues going on in the world that I wanted to impact. However, it is said that when it hurts bad enough, you'll make a change. And that's what I did.
The latter part of 2022 was a year of healing and a crucial turning point in my professional life. I got the chance to go offline, and I'm thrilled to have made a long overdue comeback as a Profit & Purpose coach who works to bridge the gap between "we've got to do something" and "here's how we make a difference."
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I'm delighted beyond belief with the framework I created to collaborate with changemakers to drive positive change that inspires work cultures and favorable publicity and creates business opportunities to solve the problems of today and tomorrow through mission-driven innovation events.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Navigating the unknown can be both an intimidating and rewarding journey, one that requires us to forge our own path in shifting, unfamiliar terrain. Despite its daunting nature, embracing this uncertainty offers great opportunities for growth we wouldn't have achieved otherwise. This is one of the hardest things I face as a business owner, but also one of the most rewarding. Dare I say, kinda like having a kid. Ha!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Having an understanding of why you've chosen to become a business owner is key in guiding the direction and goals of your company's operations. By having this clarity, you'll be able to make informed decisions that will help ensure success for both the present and future.
- Really know the problem your business solves and craft a solution that resonates with your customers. Make it easy for your customers to identify that your business is the answer. Reduce the length of your sales cycle, make it easy for your network to promote you, and for your customer to recognize your business as the go-to provider.
- Learn to appreciate the journey as much as you appreciate the results. Achieving your goals is important, but don't forget to savor the journey as you reach for them. Make sure every step along the way counts!
