What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide face-to-face and online meeting facilitation services using a groupware technology called electronic brainstorming and specialized software tools. My customers include commercial, government, and nonprofit organizations. While I facilitate all manner of meetings, I specialize in strategic planning workshops.

Tell us about yourself

I read about electronic brainstorming technology and arranged a demonstration at the University of Arizona, where it was originally developed. What motivates me is the opportunity to increase the collective intelligence of a group (its group IQ) by combining technological, behavioral, and procedural interventions.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting my book "Differentiation Strategy: Winning Customers by Being Different" published by Routledge and completing the e-learning course that serves as a field guide to the book. See www.differentiationstrategy.com.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

While I now work on my own, I used to own a retail business, where one of the most difficult things was managing employees.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do what you love, and the money will follow.
  2. Learn how to sell. Don't expect "If you build it, they will come."
  3. Learn how to deal with employees.
