Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Justin Nault, founder, and CEO of Clovis, located in Austin, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm the Founder of Clovis. I specialize in helping women take back their health & happiness by helping them change their views on "getting healthy." We completely turn our backs on the outdated "no pain, no gain" mentality that has convinced everyone that getting healthy requires starvation, pain, and sacrifice. We're tired of seeing people try to change their health from a place of hating their bodies. Instead, we teach them to get healthy from a place of self-love, nourishment, and abundance!
Tell us about yourself
I founded Clovis after my brother and his wife brought their daughter Savannah into the world. She was born terminally ill, suffering from over 300 seizures per day. It was during my time in the pediatric ICU speaking with neurologists that I learned the importance of nutrition on human health and wellness and that something as simple as the daily diet could dramatically improve seizure disorders in children. I learned about the Ketogenic Diet for the treatment of epileptic seizures in children. I found this so fascinating that I began studying biochemistry textbooks every spare hour that I had. Unfortunately, our medical system is broken. The baby formulas they give infants in the pediatric ICU are full of toxic ingredients.
It's criminal, really. So, the first-ever Clovis product was actually invented in my kitchen as a Superfood baby formula for Savannah that was fed to her through a G-Tube in her stomach. I got the blessing of the neurologists to do this because my formula was far superior to the junk in the hospital. This led me to massive realizations surrounding our broken food system, toxic healthcare system, and all of the misinformation and condition we've all been fed since we were children. I found it impossible not to share my findings with the world, and that's how Clovis was born. I wake up every day motivated to help people experience optimal human health & wellness, which I believe to be our birthright.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is having helped thousands of people transform their health & wellness through the information I've shared. The ripple effects I've seen from the value I've shared often take my breath away. I've received countless emails from podcasts listeners and Clovis customers telling me that they've not only transformed their own health but also the health of their entire family! The fact that there are thousands of "Clovis kids" because their parents finally decided to give them the gift of proper nutrition just warms my heart in a way I can't even accurately describe!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I'd have to say time management. All of the books, podcasts, and videos from "experts" in business are pretty heavily centered around "the doing." But the truth is, I've found exponentially more value in "the being." Hustling and grinding, working 16-hour days, and barely sleeping are all heavily glorified in our modern society. I fell into the trap of believing that nonsense in my early years as a business owner. Over the years, I've learned countless lessons, and the biggest ones have all been around "doing" less and "being" more.
The most successful entrepreneurs I know all spent years doing the hustle and grind and have come to the same conclusion that making plenty of space in your schedule for self-care and personal reflection is the only way to ensure you can show up in the world as the best version of yourself and therefore the best business owner who is adding the most the value to the world.
Believe it or not, this is VERY difficult to do! There is always "more to be done" as a business owner and entrepreneur, and the magic lies in knowing what to "no" to and only saying "yes" to the things that matter most.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Hire coaches and mentors! There is something to be said for wisdom through experience and learning lots of lessons through your own mistakes and running headfirst into unforeseen obstacles, but if I could go back in time, I would spend nearly all of my available capital hiring successful business people and consultants who have already done the things I'm trying to do. I can't even express how valuable this is. Coaches and Mentors are absolutely invaluable, but early on in business, we tend to have a "scarcity" mindset. We're afraid to spend money on things like Coaches, but they are absolutely priceless in my experience.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
If I could rent billboards over the interstates in the busiest cities in the world, it would say, "You cannot get healthy from a place of self-hate." I'm on a mission to convince people that getting healthy is an act of self-love, nourishment, and abundance. You can choose to get healthy because you love yourself. You can stop eating toxic food because you love your body enough to not poison it. You can love yourself so much that you refuse to suffer needlessly for hours in the gym doing workouts that you hate. I want everyone to know that you can love yourself for better health!
