Easy-to-use Practice Management Software - ClinicSense
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Daniel Ruscigno, Co-Founder of ClinicSense, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
ClinicSense offers practice management software to health and wellness practitioners.
Tell us about yourself
The idea for ClinicSense came from my business partner, Mike Vesia. Mike was working for a marketing agency that was helping the owners of small healthcare businesses grow their client base through things like door hangers and recall postcards. After working closely with health and wellness practitioners for 6 years, he learned about the daily pains that were eating up valuable time and resources. That's when he approached me, and we started to work on an MVP.
Today, I am motivated by the challenge that comes with solving new problems for our customers as the landscape of healthcare changes. Specifically, creating a product that offers customization and flexibility for different types of healthcare providers working under one roof while maintaining the ease of use we've become known for. This means lots of brainstorming and iterating on ideas. It's become a great creative outlet for me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
One of the benefits of being a business owner is that you get to decide how the business will be run. And like many business owners, my goal when starting ClinicSense was to design a business that would support the lifestyle that I wanted to live.
For me, this meant working when I felt most productive, having the flexibility to take care of household chores or participate in hobbies during the day, being able to work from anywhere in the world, and surrounding myself with a team of talented people. My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is achieving what I initially set out to do.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Initially, the hardest part about being a business owner was attracting our first customers. There were incumbents in the space that had been around for several years. Choosing to work with a startup over an incumbent is a risk for a potential customer. They want to know you're still going to be around for 5+ years. To win over these customers, you have to have a better product and a better customer service experience. Eventually, you develop a reputation, and this becomes less of a challenge. Today, the biggest challenge is growing a fully remote team while maintaining the culture we've developed.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Choose a niche and be the best product you can be for that market.
- Don't spread yourself too thin on acquisition channels. Stay focused on what's working best.
- As you grow, hire for roles that will free up your time so you can work on driving growth and the long-term vision for the business.
