Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Claudia Cometa, founder and CEO of Peace Advocacy Group, located in Clearwater, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My team and I provide our clients with private patient advocacy services. This means that we help others navigate the complexities of the healthcare system, find the answers they need, and ultimately find their own voice in their care. Our clients are people facing a new diagnosis, elderly parents of adult children who want to be sure someone is advocating for their health, and young entrepreneurs who are facing health challenges but don't have the time to adequately address them.
Tell us about yourself
I started my career as a clinical pharmacist, working alongside healthcare teams to optimize medication management. After my dad was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2016 and I saw the medical system from the patient's side, I knew I needed to advocate for others as I did for him. I was in shock and disbelief at the system I was a part of for so many years and how poorly it was serving its patients. My dad's memory is what motivates me every day. Knowing I am giving someone else's dad or family member another chance to live a life of wellness. There's no better feeling.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My clients are telling me I saved their life. There's no bigger accomplishment I can achieve.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The realization that you can't just work IN your business. You truly have to work ON your business, and that can be intimidating for those of us who don't have a background in business ownership.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Move forward imperfectly. You won't have all the answers. And if you wait until you think you do, you waited too long.
- Be willing to change. Your clients may not be the people you originally imagined. Your services may end up different than your business plan. That's ok.
- Learn to seek wisdom within and tune out the external noise. Everyone has an opinion. Don't collect those opinions and make business decisions based on them. Learn to get quiet and seek internal guidance.
