Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Clark Mishler, Owner of Clark James Mishler Photography, located in Calistoga, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As a freelance documentary photographer, I am almost always hired to photograph people. My photographs explore the lives of real people as they live and work in their environment.

Tell us about yourself

Every day, when I first wake up, and my feet hit the floor, I say to myself: Yes, let's do it again! I studied Advertising Design at the Art Center in L.A. and, halfway through my career, switched to photography. I have never looked back and totally love being a documentary photographer.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have been able to make a good living in a creative profession. My customers have always paid me on time and seem happy to do so.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I love almost every aspect of being my own boss. There might be 5% of things I do every month that is not exactly fun. That means that 95% of what I do is pleasurable or better. Being a business owner requires a wide variety of skills, and I believe you need to embrace all of them.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I really don't know much about being an owner of a franchise. I don't know much about running a retail shop or a business that produces and sells products. The only thing I know is how to run a successful creative service. And, if I were to suggest anything for anyone who wants to start, run and grow a creative business, I would urge you to always consider each job carefully before agreeing to accept the job. Before agreeing to do anything, I suggest you assign a number from 0 to 10 scale for each of the following three items:

  1. Will it be fun?
  2. Will I learn from the experience?
  3. Will I be well compensated for the work?

For each question, assign a number, 0 for no fun at all, or 10 for "This might be the most fun ever!" After determining a number for each of the three questions, add them up. If they don't add up to 20 or higher, DO NOT TAKE THE JOB! This simple test has never failed me, never.
