Freelance Editor and Proofreader - Clare Jordan

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Clare Jordan, a freelance editor, and proofreader based in Mount Dora, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a freelance editor and proofreader. I work on everything from business copy to creative content, guiding my clients to elevate and polish their writing.

Tell us about yourself

My background is in education, and I spent many years helping my students improve their writing skills. Editing and proofing eventually seemed like a natural leap to take. I had intended for this work to be a side hustle only, but I fell in love with editing in a fierce way. I love collaborating with my clients, and I love the satisfaction of putting those final touches on a document before sending it off. But what's especially magical is the feeling of getting lost in the work of shutting out the rest of the world for just a few hours and knowing nothing but the words before me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I had to overcome a lot of fear of inadequacy to move forward with this. I can tell you that the impostor syndrome struggle is real. There was a steep learning curve, and I was required to step way out of my comfort zone. Still, I worked through the challenges and the discomfort to create this new world for myself.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things I've had to face has been the uncertain nature of freelancing. There are no guarantees about how much work will come your way at any given time, which can make life feel pretty dicey.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Immerse yourself in the world you want to become part of. Take all the courses you can, network, join groups, and find mentorship if possible.
  2. Prepare yourself, both emotionally and financially, for things to take a long time to get up and running. Know that it will not always be easy.
  3. Be ready to pivot when necessary. Circumstances will almost certainly change, and you must be able to change with them. In order to do this, make sure you are flexible, well-rounded, and open-minded.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you are passionate about what you want to do, then that will be your fuel. When you seek to help other people, it's usually a big motivator!
